Swimming With Sharks

Shark Tank

It’s pitch day in the deep end. A wide-eyed entrepreneur finds himself literally swimming with sharks – venture capitalist sharks.

He’s adrift in a little rowboat, projector slides flapping in the sea breeze, as a panel of great whites in tailored suits circle around. Each shark sports a corporate logo fin and a predatory grin.

One flips through a pitch deck with its fin; another licks its chops, perhaps contemplating the founder more than the idea. The entrepreneur clears his throat, trying to ignore the Jaws theme pounding in his ears, and stammers out buzzwords: “Our projected growth is… strong.”

The water ripples with interest (or hunger). In the audience, fellow founders watch like a nervous school of fish, knowing any flop of weakness could trigger a feeding frenzy.

In the Shark Tank of startup funding, you either learn to swim with the predators or end up as chum.
