Cubicles turn into quest zones, and every task has a score. A programmer grinds out code like a player farming XP, eyes on the prize of a virtual badge for “Inbox Zero Mastery.” Across the room, when an employee finishes a grueling marathon of back-to-back meetings, a triumphant chime rings out.
“Achievement Unlocked: 100 Hours of Overtime!”
Her colleagues give a thumbs-up like fellow gamers on a leaderboard, even as she yawns through the victory fanfare. The HR department doles out collectible pins for “Team Player” and “Office Early Bird” as if they’re rare power-ups.
There’s even a colorful progress bar above the intern’s head slowly filling with each coffee fetch quest completed!
It became evident that turning work into a game might boost motivation in the short term, but eventually everyone learned that winning just meant you get to play again – tomorrow.
